Could Meghan Markle Run for President?

Recent political news include rumors of Markle’s ambitions. A close friend of hers noted, in an interview with Vanity Fair, that “one of the reasons she was so keen not to give up her American citizenship was so she had the option to go into politics.” Others who work closely with Markle have insisted that she does not have any plans to go into politics as a career despite her engagement with the topic of politics.

Within the British royal family, the expectation is to maintain political neutrality, and Prince Harry has never entered political discussions. In their video for Time, neither Harry nor Meghan discussed any particular candidates; instead, they brought up the significance of voting. Harry did get close to breaching neutrality in the video by saying, “As we approach this November, it’s vital that we reject hate speech, misinformation, and online negativity.” Buckingham Palace showed some concern at this apparent position statement, releasing their own announcement that “the Duke is not a working member of the royal family.”

Markle has shown a lack of affinity for Trump several times over the last few years. She called Trump “misogynistic” in a 2016 interview; in response, Trump said, “I didn’t know that she was nasty.” When Trump came to the UK to make a state visit in 2019, Markle, who was on maternity leave, did not make any appearances.

Markle was told that her political opinions would have to be private and her political activism would have to decrease once she joined the royal family. She has expressed frustration with this but has maintained her activism, cold calling voters and speaking at an online event with Michelle Obama. Her biographer, Omid Scobie, has claimed that Markle would like to be President one day. Could he be right?
