Russia launches multi-front offensive on Ukraine

Russia launches multi-front offensive in the latest update from the war in Ukraine

The Russian invasion of Ukraine is entering a different phase. The troops of Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a new offensive on Monday.

Russian forces are now targeting the eastern region of the neighboring country. Donbas is part of Ukraine’s industrial heartland.

The move is important for Putin after experiencing some setbacks last week. According to Ukrainian officials, their side is responsible for drowning the Russian guided-missile cruiser Moskva.

It was the flagship of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet, and many considered it to be the most powerful warship in the Black Sea region.

It is still not known how many of the 485 crew members on board survived. This strategic win for Ukraine is likely to impact Putin’s determination.

The battle for Donbas is crucial

Russia is getting ready for a large-scale invasion of Donbas. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said his troops are ready to respond and will not cede the region.

This battle might determine the outcome of the war between Russia and Ukraine. The implications cannot be understated for Ukraine.

The brother of Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko, Wladimir Klitschko, said Tuesday that if Russia succeeds in Donbas, it might try to go further west.

This means the capital of Ukraine could become an objective again for Moscow. He also stated that there is no way Russia would give up on the capital.

While he says Ukrainian forces are ready to respond, they still need more weapons to be efficient. Donbas has been a goal for Russia for many years. Putin has even backed separatist units in the area.

Russia is also recognizing the importance of this next phase in the war.

Russia says a new phase in underway

Sergey Lavrov, the foreign minister of Russia, claims this new phase is significant for the so-called “special operation” in Ukraine.

The Russian official says the invasion was always about “liberating” the people of Donetsk and Luhansk. Lavrov has dismissed the possibility of using nuclear weapons in Ukraine.

President Zelensky has long said that Russia could use those weapons to have the upper hand. Lavrov has argued that most of the atrocities that have been broadcast in the media are staged by Ukrainian forces.

While Russia invaded Ukraine, Moscow has always sought to blame the rival nation for the horrors of the war.

Ukraine continues to resist attacks on multi fronts.

Ukrainian forces are on defense

Ukraine is still in control of the southeastern port city of Mariupol. Troops in the area have rejected a Russian deadline for surrender.

However, the resistance is not easy and has been costly for infrastructure and civilians.

Ukrainian forces have been surrounded in the city since March 1.

Officials insist that surrender is still not in the cards. Russia is threatening to eliminate resistance in Mariupol.

Ukraine is under attack in different places. Russia launched four missile strikes on the western city of Lviv on Monday. The offensive killed at least seven people and injured eleven others. Residential buildings and a school were hit during the strikes.

As of Tuesday, the eastern Ukrainian city of Kreminna is under Russian control.

Russia is slowly but surely making important gains in Ukraine as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is slashing the economic growth forecast for the world economy in the next two years.

The impacts of this war will be felt in many corners of the globe.
