Afghanistan Situation: Updates & Biden's Response

Afghanistan’s situation is not suitable for the people still inhabiting the country. There has been an increase in evacuations from the nation over the past few days, but there are still issues occurring in the country. The Taliban takeover in Afghanistan began with the United States removing troops from the nation.

This marked the end of a two-decade-long war that began following the 9/11 attack on the United States. President Biden and the United States military have still been very involved in the process of removing United States citizens.

However, the president has been the center of scrutiny. Additionally, many other countries are speaking out about the Taliban taking over the nation. Here are the latest updates throughout Afghanistan and how countries have responded during the process.

Updates in Afghanistan

President Biden has responded to the White House criticism by saying that he has firm control of the country. This does not seem accurate considering that the Taliban took over Afghanistan in less than two weeks. The original projection was that it would take the terrorist organization one month to override the entire country.

Biden was placed in a difficult predicament because four administrations have dealt with the war in the Middle East. He took on the responsibility of finishing the job, and many people believe it was done in an incompetent manner.

Donald Trump planned to remove troops from Afghanistan, but his plan was more systematic than the current administration’s strategy. Biden’s plan has caused his approval rating to plummet and the insurgency to take over Afghanistan. The Taliban was in power when the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center occurred.

Muqtedar Khan, an Afghanistan advocate who testified against Congress regarding the removal plan, spoke out in the past week as the chaos has ensued.

He said, “So for us who are with him, the shocking part is how badly it was handled. That is a troubling point – is that how you’re going to be governing? The U.S. is coming across as a very incompetent country – not being able to handle the things we’re good at handling.”

The pictures, videos, and narratives from Afghanistan have made the United States look bad to the rest of the world. People support the president’s decision to remove troops, but his strategy was flawed.

Biden’s Response About Afghanistan Situation

President Biden spoke to ABC News this week as evacuation efforts have continued in the country. Biden, who claims to be a foreign policy professional, has been taken advantage of by the Taliban.

He said, “The idea that somehow, there’s a way to have gotten out without chaos ensuing – I don’t know how that happens. The Taliban is not the North Vietnamese army. They’re not remotely comparable in terms of capability. There’s going to be no circumstance where you see people being lifted off the roof of an embassy of the United States from Afghanistan.”

He was criticized by countless nations for the first part of this statement for acting without a plan. Biden did not believe the troops could be removed without chaos ensuing. Although, if this was the case, he should have gone back to the drawing board.
