The Russian government has stated that they will not let Navalny pass away in prison, but their promise may be spineless. Yulia Navalnaya, the opposition leaders’ wife, has spoken out about the situation and already claimed victory for her husband even though he is in jail.

Alexei Navalny’s imprisonment and starvation protest in jail has caused riots throughout the world. Leaders from foreign countries have told President Putin not to let him starve in prison. Navalny has now stopped his hunger strike, but he could still die at any moment as his body slowly recovers.

Navalny was not in good health following the failed assassination attempt against him.

Yulia Navalnaya Comments to 60 Minutes

Alexei Navalny was the subject of an attempted murder that left him in a medically induced coma. He recovered in Germany, but the opposition leader stated his desire to return to Russia when he became healthy. Putin said that Navalny was going to be arrested when he set foot in the country.

Putin kept his promise to the opposition leader and locked him up when he returned to Russia. Yulia told 60 Minutes that it was an easy choice for her and her husband to go back to the country, even though imprisonment was on the horizon.

Yulia said:

“Whatever comes next, Alexei has already won. He survived this horrible poisoning and returned to Moscow to face those who tried to murder him. Putin knows it. His advisors, his friends, his government, everybody in his inner circle know it. Driven by embarrassment and anger, Putin has nothing left to do but to physically torture Alexei in prison. Make his life almost worse than if he died. Destroy the organization that my husband created. Arrest his colleagues, friends, and relatives. What else can he do? Ask to kill him again?”

Yulia Navalnaya does make valid arguments in her statement. There is nothing else that Putin can do to the opposition leader. If he dies in prison, Russians all over the nation will riot. It will also cause foreign countries to act against Putin, so the president is in a difficult position.

Navalny’s Efforts

Alexei Navalny believes that he has done his job in the country in creating change. Navalny, a lawyer and former presidential candidate, has made an oppositional movement that does not appear like it will disappear if he dies in prison.

The assassination attempt caused Navalny to become stronger and try harder to rally the opposition in the country. He was successful, and this seems like the first time that Putin is not sure how to handle the situation.

Yulia expressed her gratitude for her husband’s relentlessness to change Russia. She said:

“I am very proud of my husband. Every minute of every day. I admire his bravery and courage, his tenacity and strength. I stand by him and his beliefs, and I am so happy to be joined by thousands of Russians who are fighting for a better future for our country together with us.”

Alexei is no longer starving himself, so it will be interesting to see how Putin handles his prison sentence if he successfully recovers.
