The Vatican had been taking an uncommon stance on many issues engrained in the Catholic faith. Pope Francis has uniquely interpreted theology since he became the pontiff. However, the Vatican announced its latest outlook on gay marriage, which aligns with the Catholic Church’s foundations.

On Monday, the Vatican announced that the Catholic Church could not bless same-sex marriage because God “cannot bless sin.”

The Announcement

The Vatican’s announcement on Monday came as a response to a series of questions from religious leaders in the Catholic Church. Pope Francis had not made his stance clear on same-sex marriage in an extended period of time, so people wondered if the Catholic Church would take a progressive view on the topic.

The answer was written in a two-page document. It was published in seven languages, and Pope Francis approved it without any hesitation.

Gay People vs. Gay Marriage

The Vatican noted that they have a differing opinion for gay people. The Catholic Church welcomes gay people and believes they should be treated with dignity. Although, the Catholic Church cannot honor same-sex marriage because it’s considered a sin.

Marriage is one of the seven sacraments, and the Vatican released the statement to make it clear that gay partnership does not align with the Catholic Church’s view of matrimony.

The Vatican wrote that “gay sex is intrinsically disordered.” One of the principal beliefs on marriage is that it’s meant for procreation. Only a man and a woman can have offspring, so it’s unlikely that the Vatican’s stance will change on gay marriage.

Pope Francis Under Fire

In 2019, Pope Francis told Televisa, a Mexican television station, that he endorsed same gender marriage in the civil world. He said that gay couples should be able to get married and be protected under civil law. Traditional Catholics did not like this statement.

He said, “Homosexual people have the right to be in a family. They are children of God.” When referring to gay couples with children, he announced that “You can’t kick someone out of a family, nor make their life miserable for this. What we have to have is a civil union law; that way, they are legally covered.”

Because Pope Francis made this declaration, people were shocked when the Vatican published its two-page document on gay marriage. Some were happy, and others, predominantly homosexual Catholics, were disappointed.

Pope Francis’ progressivism has been the reason that people in the Catholic Church have highly discussed gay marriage. Pope Francis made his beliefs clear, and the statement did it in a reasonable fashion.

The Catholic Church denounced gay marriage because of the sacramental definition of marriage. The Vatican did not want to give the misconception that gay marriage is perceived in the same way as a heterosexual partnership.

Even though the Vatican doesn’t approve same gender marriage , the Catholic Church is still taking a more progressive position on the topic than in years past. The opinion was the same in the early 2000s, but gay marriage was nearly forbidden in the Catholic Church.
