Prince Phillip Dies at 99

April 10, 2021

On Friday morning, Prince Phillip passed away at Windsor Castle. Phillip, the husband of Queen Elizabeth II, was 99 years old. Phillip was born in Greece and married into the Royal Family, but he has been a mainstay for years.

In his tenure as a Royal Prince, Phillip made 22,000 solo appearances, 637 overseas trips, gave close to 6,000 speeches, and worked with 800 charities.

Prince Phillip went to the hospital in February, and doctors discovered that he had a preexisting heart condition. He was released after a month of hospitalization and a major heart surgery.

Quotes from the Prime Minister

Queen Elizabeth is mourning the loss, so she has not made a comprehensive statement besides releasing a notice of her husband’s death. Prime Minister Boris Johnson released a statement on Friday morning.

Johnson said, “Like the expert carriage driver that he was, he helped to steer the royal family and the monarchy so that it remains an institution indisputably vital to the balance and happiness of our national life. We mourn today with Her Majesty The Queen, we offer our condolences to her and to all her family, and we give thanks, as a nation and a Kingdom, for the extraordinary life and work of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.”

Prince Phillip’s Funeral Arrangements

Prince Phillip passed 12 days before Queen Elizabeth’s 95th birthday. The Duke of Edinburgh’s death occurred two months before he would have celebrated his 100th birthday on June 10.

The House of Commons paid tribute to Prince Phillip on Friday afternoon, and these tributes will continue throughout the nation for an extended period. Funeral preparations are underway, but COVID-19 will limit the ceremonies to some extent.

Prince Phillip made it clear that he did not want to have a massive state funeral, which will not be an issue when dealing with the virus. His body will be buried at Windsor Castle, and his funeral will occur at St. George’s Chapel, as he wished. Royal Family officials have not set a funeral date, but it will be a small event.

No members of the public will be able to attend the funeral because of COVID-19.

International Response

One thing that is on the minds of many people worldwide is if Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will attend the funeral.

Prince Phillip’s death comes just weeks after Harry and Meghan’s tell-all interview aired with Oprah Winfrey. Therefore, it’s a possibility that Harry and Meghan elect not to attend the service.

Leaders all over the world have sent messages of condolence to Queen Elizabeth. Two of the first to acknowledge Phillip’s death were Vladimir Putin of Russia and U.S. President Joe Biden.

Phillip and Elizabeth married in 1947. Phillip became the Duke of Edinburgh by King George IV, who was Elizabeth’s father. The marriage was controversial at the time because Phillip did not come of Royal descent.

However, the Royal family quickly accepted Prince Phillip as one of their own, and he became an icon in Britain.
