Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe is a British-Iranian charity worker arrested in 2016 on a trip to Iran with her daughter to visit her parents. She was sentenced for plotting to take down the Iranian government. This was because she taught a journalism course that the prosecutor believed taught people to spread propaganda against the Iranian government.

Zaghari-Ratcliffe just finished serving her sentence, but she is now back in court because of new charges.

The New Trial

Zaghari-Ratcliffe was imprisoned for something that seemed unreasonable, and it caused her to miss five years of her daughter’s life. She is still in Iran, and she appeared in court again on Sunday.

Zaghari-Ratcliffe has gone public about the abuse she faced in the Iranian prison system and the mental health issues she had to endure. The trial gave Zaghari-Ratcliffe and her followers that she could be heading back to prison again in Iran.

The new charge was for spreading propaganda against the Iranian regime while she was in prison. The indictment had been announced, with a few months remaining in her five-year sentence.

She completed her initial jail stint last week, and a new verdict is expected to be announced next week about her future.

The United Kingdom

The United Kingdom has been doing its part to help Zaghari-Ratcliffe be released. The country is the most influential factor in the next week to determine if Zaghari-Ratcliffe will be heading back to jail.

Zaghari-Ratcliffe’s husband, Richard Ratcliffe, said, “The charges are not particularly relevant since the point of reviving this case again last week was simply to hold Nazanin for leverage as negotiations with the UK have intensified.”

The United Kingdom and Iran have been negotiating a lump sum of money that the regime is claiming is unpaid to them by Britain. The debated money is 400 million pounds or $500 million. This debate goes back to 1979 during the Islamic Revolution.

The ruler of Iran at that time paid Britain for tanks that were never delivered. Iran has not forgotten about this payment, and they are using Zaghari-Ratcliffe as a way to assure that they receive the money.

Zaghari-Ratcliffe Debate

Iran charged Zaghari-Ratcliffe on empty evidence that is still being debated to this day by her supporters. Zaghari-Ratcliffe was taken into custody on her way home from her trip to Iran in April of 2016.

The case with Zaghari-Ratcliffe has displayed the hatred between Britain and Iran on the global level. Zaghari-Ratcliffe is not allowed to leave the country until her trial is settled. She was released from prison in March because of COVID-19, but she faced house arrest in her parents’ home.

The news from the trial on Sunday was that it was very peaceful. This could be an indication of the falseness of this trial. If the United Kingdom delivers the money to Iran, Zaghari-Ratcliffe will most likely be released.

Zaghari-Ratcliffe denied the latest charges in her statement in court. Both sides have claimed that Zaghari-Ratcliffe’s case does not have anything to do with Iran’s money.

This ongoing trial should become more apparent in the coming days.
