HAITI PRESIDENT JOVENEL MOÏSE ASSASSINATED AT HOME

The nation of Haiti is in shock because president Jovenel Moïse was assassinated in his home on Thursday. The news was delivered by the nation’s interim prime minister, Claude Joseph. There have been numerous complaints about the legitimacy of the president over the past year.

Moïse’s wife was also injured in the attack on the presidential quarters in the middle of the night. An unidentified group of shooters stormed the house and started shooting in one of the most barbaric acts in the country’s history.

Jovenel Moïse Attack Details

Claude Joseph was visibly disturbed when he addressed the nation following the murder of Jovenel Moïse. He said, “A group of individuals who have not been identified, some of whom were speaking Spanish, attacked the private residence of the President of the Republic and fatally injured the Head of State.”

He described that the first lady had survived, but she is in critical condition following the shooting. Joseph called for the nation to stay calm in the wake of the tragedy. He said security forces had been deployed throughout the nation to keep citizens secure.

He finished his address by stating, “Democracy and the Republic will win out.” The attackers were speaking English and Spanish, so they were not Haitian citizens. This has raised many questions throughout the nation.

Countless citizens do not support the Haiti president, so it’s possible that it was a planned hit. Nevertheless, this is an extreme accusation to make about the murder. Investigators have been working nonstop since the attack to acquire information and figure out a motive behind the murder.

Rumors, Rumors, and More Rumors

The nation is in shock, which is not surprising. Nobody knows what happened, and since the murderers were not Haitian, this has caused rumors to spread throughout the country.

Social media has been the location of many conspiracy theories for the attack. The Miami Herald reported that one of the shooters was an American impersonating a U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency operative proper to the attack.

This is how the shooters were able to clear the streets before the attack.

Witnesses said the man was screaming, “DEA operation. Everybody stands down. DEA operation. Everybody back up, stand down.”

At 2:50 AM, police fled to the scene, but they could not break into the building because of heavy fire. The whole area was under panic, so police had trouble entering the area. The first lady has been evacuated to an unidentified country for medical help, but it looked like the shooters wanted to kill her as well.

Throughout the year, Haiti was filled with anti-government riots. Many of the demonstrations were motivated by hatred towards the late president. Haitian citizens claimed that his five-year term had ended, and he should have left office.

However, Jovenel Moïse declared that he was not leaving. There was an assassination plan against him earlier this year that was revealed by security, so this assassination is not out of nowhere.

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki gave her condolences to the nation when she was asked by CNN. She also said the Biden Administration “stands by them to provide any assistance that’s needed.”
