BRAZIL SHOOT OUT: AT LEAST 25 KILLED IN RIO DE JANEIRO

In Brazil, at least 25 people were killed in a shootout, including a police officer. The shooting occurred, during a police operation in Jacarezinho neighborhood, a favela in Rio de Janeiro.

The operation was initiated after police received information that drug dealers were recruiting children for their gang. Bullets struck two people on a metro train, but they survived.

Inspector Andre Leonardo de Mello Frias, a police officer in the Brazilian capital, was killed, according to police. “He honoured the career he cherished and will be missed,” according to a Facebook post.

The gang targeted in this raid is said to be involved in drug trafficking, muggings, killings, and kidnappings, according to local reports.

When police stormed the favela, television photos showed criminals attempting to flee through rooftops.
Meanwhile, residents of Jacarezinho have taken to social media to post their accounts of what they saw.

Other residents said officers had seized their phones, accusing them of warning gang members of the raid.

Rio de Janeiro is one of the most violent states in Brazil, with large swaths of land controlled by criminals, many of whom are connected to powerful drug-trafficking gangs.

Also, is the city with the biggest percentage of people living in shanty towns. It’s a population of 1,3 million, 70% of which are black.

During anti-crime operations in major cities, Brazilian security forces have been accused of using disproportionate force against civilians.
